Back in 2018, we received an email from Nuwakot District that caught our attention. We receive many appeal letters from schools in Nepal, but the man who sent it showed real determination to make changes. By an amazing stroke of luck, a new project sponsor came on board just at the right time, with funding for six schools and the project commenced in 2018. In 2019 support from two other donors extended to another three schools and the earthbag rebuild of Pragitsheel School.

My first visit to Nuwakot was very memorable. I found myself on the back of a motorbike from 7am to 7pm from the backroads of Kathmandu to remote schools up steep hillsides in stunning scenery.

Some of our Successful Projects

shree Ajingare school

One of the first schools that we visited (Read our blog Visiting a New School), this school didn’t change immediately. However after attending our hands on teacher training workshops in Nuwakot, the teachers here are really embracing change. The ECD class is welcoming and decorated with materials created by the teacher and the children love the games and rhymes.

shree Sundaradevi school

We were horrified to see the condition of this school which was still in almost total ruin years after the 2015 earthquake. Teachers were working amongst rubble and in classrooms with no walls and the wind whistling through it.

Read about our experience in our blog: A broken School but there is hope.

Classrooms have been rebuilt and with First Steps Himalaya’s refurbishment, teacher training and support, children now learn in child friendly, nurturing learning environments conducive to developing a love of learning.

shree Kalyanpur school

Situated in a remote community, this school has been transformed from dull and uninspiring to nurturing and fun. Teachers have learnt about behaviour management and no longer need to shout at the children to get them engaged in their learning. Children in the ECD are encouraged to choose their own activities, a big step towards independent learning.
